Today is day 5 of the Whittier Hills high school team's mission journey here in Costa Rica. It has been a full and blessed week thus far. Here are some of the highlights:
Saturday: after orientation and lunch, we drove out to the church so the WHBC team could meet their Tico peers for the first time. Their nervousness soon dissipated and despite the language barrier, they began making new friends.
Sunday: in the evening training session, I noticed how the Ticos sat on the edge of their seats listening to one of the girls on the team share her testimony in Spanish. Watching her took me back to a 17-year-old version of myself when I gave my testimony in Spanish on a Mexico missions trip. Little did I know then how He would weave that experience into my life so many years later.
Monday: in the afternoon, the team went out with the Ticos to invite neighborhood kids to a vacation Bible school event starting on Wednesday. In the evening, the WHBC team and the Ticos gathered together for a training time during which two girls on the team stepped out of their comfort zones to share about the importance of loving others, especially the unlovely.
Tuesday: One of the quietest girls on the team stepped out in faith and shared in front of the whole group how God has been giving her an almost insatiable appetite for His Word. God used her story, together with two of her team mates', to inspire the Ticos to begin doing a devotional we provided for them. Praise God for this turning point!
